“What Is a Biblical Covenant”
By: Pastor Paul R. Mullet
In the Old Testament the word “covenant” comes from the Hebrew word ‘berit’ (Strong’s # 1285 (ber-eeth’) בְּרִית confederacy, confederate, covenant, league).
Yahweh’s covenants contain two especially important components; terms and duration. Although humans, may reach their own covenants or some sort of other agreements through their own devices, Yahweh’s covenants with HIS PEOPLE are unilateral. He alone determines the terms and conditions of such “agreements”, humans choose whether to accept them or not.
For example after Yahweh clearly defined the aspects of the covenant He was making with the nation of True Israel, including the blessings for honoring it and the consequences of ignoring it (Leviticus 26; Deuteronomy 28-30), both parties Yahweh and His chosen Race of Israel, accepted it.
Through this process Yahweh and True Israel entered into a Holy covenant or “relationship”, a binding commitment or agreement to honor and fulfill their respective roles.
A second important concept for us to fully understand Yahweh’s covenant with True Israel is its continuing relevance to our time period or era. In reaffirming the covenant with the generation of Israelites who were poised to enter the “Promised Land”, Moses explained that they were doing this; “That [Yahweh] he may establish thee to day for a people unto himself, and that he may be unto thee a God, as he hath said unto thee, and as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath; But with him that standeth here with us this day before the Lord our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day:” (Deuteronomy 29: 13-15) Given these verses we can see that the covenant clearly applies to Israel’s descendants as well.
Fully understanding the continuing nature of this covenant King David, upon the arrival of the Ark of the Covenant, wrote: “Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth. Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations; Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac; And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,” (I Chronicles 16:8-9, 14-17).
Covenants are agreements between two or more persons, with some way of binding them. Yahweh Himself designed this covenant He had made with Abraham and his descendants. When Yahweh makes a covenant, HE WILL ALWAYS PERFORM WHAT HE HAS BOUND HIMSELF TO DO!
